Why should I make burger dogs?
We all know the ratio of buns to hot dogs is way off for some reason. So let’s put these extra hot dog buns to use. The kids can enjoy this exciting new look that fits right in their hands. You can enjoy a double cheeseburger dog with your favorite condiments.
But what exactly is a burger dog?
A burger dog is exactly as you read it, a burger patty in a hot dog bun. Don’t overthink it, enjoy the simplicity! Here is why I like these burger dogs and why you should give them a try.
🌟 Put the extra hot dog buns to good use.
✨ Use our latest homemade burger seasoning or store-bought.
🌟 Make a loaded cheeseburger dog.
✨ Easy to handle for little hands or busy parents.
🌟 The condiments are spread out more evenly, which helps with tasting all the flavors.
✨ So versatile, we made them on the griddle for ease, but you can make them in a skillet on the stove.
We got inspired to make this recipe after our American flag board with burgers and hot dogs. Why not combine both in one dish? But don’t stop there. If you need more fun ideas from breakfast to dinner check out some of our griddle recipes. We have really been enjoying cooking on the griddle.
Pro Tips
Preheat the griddle. No matter what brand you have, this recipe will be a success when the griddle is preheated at a steady temperature.
Once the griddle is preheated, I close 2 of my burners on one side. It makes for a convenient “holding” area. I use it for the buns to keep warm and make serving easier. If you’re using a smaller griddle, just place the buns on a plate once they are grilled.
We shape the burger patties ahead of time and place them on a plate. When you are ready to cook sprinkle some of the seasonings on one side right before griddling. Put the seasoning side down and sprinkle more seasoning on the other side.
Ingredients
- Ground beef: Obviously! Any ground beef you like will work, or go for the ultimate with ground prime rib.
- Hot dog buns: Use your favorite, and pay attention to the size to guide shaping the beef patties to fit.
- Seasonings: That’s the easy part. We love using a spice blend from staple spices we have in the cupboard. Check out exactly what we used in the recipe card. If you have a favorite store-bought blend, use it, or sometimes salt and pepper is exactly what you need.

Condiments for the burger dogs
Have fun with this recipe. If you’re like me use the griddle to sauté some onions before you start cooking the recipe. Adding bacon bits to the ground beef is a tasty addition too.
Use your favorite cheese to make a cheeseburger dog. Sliced cheese like Colby Jack, Monterey Jack for spice, or smoked Gouda for its smokey flavor are tasty options.
Top the burger dog with the classic condiments, but don’t forget guacamole, bacon slices cooked on the griddle, caramelized onions, and my new favorite honey Dijon mustard.
Equipment
The equipment you will need for burger dogs on the griddle is really simple.
- Griddle. I love that I can cook everything in one spot, however this recipe can easily be done on a skillet inside.
- Spatula and long handle tongs.
- Paper towels.
Storage / Leftovers / Rewarm
To store, simply place the extra hamburger patties in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for 2 – 3 days.
If, for some reason, you have some leftovers, you can easily use the patties to make more burger dogs. Also, you can crumble them up and add them to pasta or quick nachos in the air fryer.
The patties can easily be rewarmed in the air fryer at 350 degrees F. for 2 – 3 minutes. Don’t forget you can also toast the buns in the air fryer as well.

- ½ teaspoon Paprika
- ¼ teaspoon ground pepper
Instructions
Prep the griddle

- If you are going to grill the hot dog buns, butter them inside and out. Set aside.
- Make 4 rectangular burger dog patties (6 oz. each). Use the buns as a template to shape the patties. Remember you will slightly smash them once on the griddle.
- Place back in the refrigerator, if not cooking right away
Cooking time
- Place the hot dog buns on the griddle to brown to your liking, around 1 minute per side.
- Place the grilled buns on the side holding area or a plate.
- Increase the temperature of the griddle to medium, depending on your model it should be between 350 – 400 degrees F.
- Sprinkle the top side of the burger dog patties with seasoning and place the seasoned side down on the griddle to cook first. Sprinkle the other side with the burger dog seasoning.
- Slightly smash each patty and cook for 1 – 2 minutes on each side.See note below.
- Going for a cheeseburger dog, add the cheese once you flip the patty.
Serving time
- Add your grilled burger dog patties to the buns and add your favorite condiments.
- Enjoy with some air fryer waffle fries.
Notes
- Make your burger dogs even more flavorful by using ground chuck or even ground prime rib.
- Knowing when to flip the burger dog patty is easy. For this recipe, it is between 1 – 2 minutes on each side. A great way to check if it is time to flip is when the color of the patty changes. Once it is halfway up, time to flip. Remember that time as a guide to know when the other side is done. For beef patties, our preferred doneness is medium (135 – 145 degrees F.). If this is not your preferred doneness simply cook a bit longer.

Here is key thing to remember:
- When you head out to use the BBQ, smoker, or outdoor griddle think about the safe placement of each. Pay close attention to the griddle it is a large hot open surface that can splatter oil.
