As you know we have fun with the air fryer. Lately,  no matter where I look everything is related to apples. I know apple season is starting and I am very excited for all the yummy things to bake. Just not quite ready to heat up my kitchen. Time to spin up the air fryer and fill the kitchen with incredible fall aromas of cinnamon sugar tortilla chips and apple pie dip.

cinnamon sugar tortilla chips and apple pie dip to the rescue

A few days ago it was an overcast, stormy day which made me want to have a cozy fall apple treat. But we are here in Florida. Now, how to get my apple pie fix in the summer?

Within minutes we had the kitchen filled with an apple pie smell. Fall had arrived and we were all smiles.

I had some gorgeous apples already and leftover tortillas from a previous meal. The girls and I decided to do some creating because tortillas are so versatile. The most time-consuming step is cutting the tortillas. Or heck you can just put one in whole and just break it up for that rustic look. This is another great recipe for small hands. They can cut the tortillas into triangles. Then put them in the bowl and cover with the melted butter and finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.

The apple dip takes only a few minutes on the stove, not enough to heat the kitchen. The apples I used were Gala apples (in this case they work well because they cook quickly) but any apples for baking will work just as well. Cut the apples into pieces add the dip ingredients into the pan on the stove. And get ready for a sweet caramel cinnamon apple dip.

We did it, in under 30 minutes, and were snaking on this sweet fall treat in the summer. You may want to make a double batch of tortillas. My crew was devouring the apple dip with the chips and when they were gone, they grabbed a spoon. If you want more chips you can make them in advance. It gives them more time to crisp up as they cool. And the leftovers, if you have any, are a perfect treat you can feel good about the family snaking on.

    Air Fryer cinnamon tortilla chips

Making chips with tortillas is quite simple. You will only need a few ingredients.

    • 4 to 5 flour tortillas (8 inches) cut into triangles. Like if you were cutting a pizza. I get about 16 slices per tortilla
    • 3 tablespoons melted salted butter
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

    How to make the chips

    1. Place your tortillas on top of each other and with a pizza cutter or a knife, cut into triangles. Like you will do for a pizza. I get about 16 slices for each tortilla. *See Note*
    2. Put the cut tortillas into a mixing bowl.
    3. Pour your melted butter over the tortillas and mix until they are covered.
    4. In a small bowl, mix your sugar and cinnamon together, then sprinkle over the tortillas.
    5. Mix well until the seasoning covers the tortillas
    6. Place the tortilla pieces in the air fryer. You will put each piece flat and try not to touch the other ones. This allows the air to circulate better and make more of an even cook.
    7. Cook in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 5 minutes or until golden.
    8. Take them out and let them cool on a cooling rack.
    9. Repeat steps 6 to 8 until you don’t have any more tortillas left.
    10. Serve with the warm apple pie dip.

    Notes:

    1. Another option for preparing the tortilla chips is to lightly butter them whole, then sprinkle the sugar & cinnamon over both sides. Just cut them and follow from step 6. Enjoy.

What you will need to make the apple dip

    • 2-3 apples, peeled, cored, and diced. Approximately 2 cups depending on the size of your apples, in this case, I used Gala apples for their sweetness.
    • Lemon juice
    • Brown sugar
    • Cinnamon
    • Cornstarch
    • Water

How to make the apple dip?

    1. Dilute the cornstarch in water. Set aside.
    2. Peeled and core your apples. Then dice them into bite sizes pieces.
    3. In a saucepan over medium heat, add your apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon.
    4. Mix for 2- 3 minutes or until the water start to come out of the apples. You will have a sauce.
    5. Add 2 tablespoons of water and mix.
    6. Add the diluted cornstarch to the mixture.
    7. Mix for 1 to 2 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
    8. Cool for a few minutes and serve with cinnamon sugar tortilla chips.

This is perfectly timed! I have so many apples from neighbour’s trees and wasn’t sure what to do with them. And we’re in the middle of a heat wave so I was excited to see I can make these in the air fryer!
