5 tips to make your next cookout a success

    • Keep it simple: Mini burgers and hot dogs are easy, simple, and tasty. You can buy patties already made and you just have to season them.
    • Mess: The griddle is perfect for this recipe. As everything is done in one spot, minimizing mess and dishes.
    • Flavor: When it comes to flavor, it all depends on which spices I will be using. I share further down our new go-to burger spice blend. It is so versatile and can be easily adapted to what works for you: spicy, sweet, or even tangy.
    • Delegate: If it is a get-together, I usually have guests bring desserts. It always varies but over summer months, these Patriotic Jello Jigglers are always a big success. Another favorite is these 4th of July cupcakes. They are perfect for any occasion from BBQ to a pool party.
    • Plan ahead: I love lists and have used lists for so many different occasions and celebrations. This Essential BBQ Checklist is a must for any BBQ or griddle party.

For many of us, cooking recipes on the griddle is one of the summer’s highlights. No doubt, this American flag board with burgers and hot dogs will be a great conversation starter for your Memorial Day, 4th July, or Labor Day BBQ. But don’t stop there, there are so many occasions to fire up the griddle. If you need some ideas, click here to take a peek at what we have been cooking.

What you will need to make this American flag board with burgers and hot dogs.

Ingredient overhead shot of spices for burgers, slider patties, hot dogs, buns, cheeses, and condiments.

This is just an overview of what I used to create the American flag board with burgers and hot dogs. Scroll down to the recipe card where I will give you more details.

    • Ground beef: When I make the patties (0.2 lbs or 90 grams), I use ground chuck, but for this specific recipe I kept it simple and used already-made slider patties from the grocery store.
    • Slider buns: I used regular slider buns but you can also use Hawaiian buns for a sweeter taste. Regular-size hamburger buns are too big for this board.
    • Hot dogs: We used the one we can find at Sam’s Club. But any would work perfectly.
    • Hot dog buns: Make sure the buns are big and long enough.
    • Seasoning: There is so much I want to share about seasoning, will talk more about it in a minute.
    • Blue tortilla chips
    • Sliced mozzarella: It is one of our favorites and is perfect for the stars, but you can also use white cheddar or provolone.
    • Condiments for hot dogs and mini burgers: I wish I could list them all here, but it will be long and boring. I would love to know what your favorite condiments are, let me know in the comment at the end of the post, so I can try it next time we fire up the griddle.

    Burger spices recipe

Four mini burgers on the griddle, two with cheese and two with the burger spices just added.

Don’t get me wrong, there are thousands of ways to spice up a mini burger patty. No right, no wrong way. Salt and pepper are a great way and we used that for many years. You can also get a spice blend at the grocery or from your favorite online site. For years we have tried so many ways until a few months ago we found our “golden egg”. As you probably have read many times we love to keep our recipes simple, without compromising the final flavor. This hamburger seasoning is no exception. We combine 5 spices and that’s it. All you need is an equal part of ⤵

    ✨ Salt
    ✨✨ Garlic powder
    ✨ Onion powder
    ✨✨ Smoked paprika
    ✨ Lemon pepper

Tools you will need when you fire up the griddle

Remember for a successful stress-free griddle time you just need to have a good recipe and tools. We already covered the recipe. Now, here are some tools I like to have with me before I head out to cook on the griddle.

    ✨✨ Oil bottle
    ✨ Long handle tongs
    ✨✨ Large spatula
    ✨ Paper towels
    ✨✨ Scraper
    ✨ Thermometer (meat and/or infrared)

Hint: Once you are done grilling, use the scraper to clean any residue. Turn the heat off and apply a thin layer of oil to coat the cooking surface of the griddle. Then you are ready to use it for our next recipe.

Big thick hot dog in a toasted bun with ketchup.

    Storage / Leftovers / Rewarm

Storage: You can store the leftover slider patties and hot dogs in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days.
Leftovers: If you have leftover mini burger patties, crumble them and place them over tortilla chips, add some shredded cheese and you have Nachos. We love making nachos in the air fryer.
Rewarm: You can place the slider patties in the air fryer at 350 degrees F. for 2 to 3 minutes. The hot dogs will reheat at 350 degrees F. but they will take a few more minutes.

    Equipment

    • Griddle
    • Long handle tongs
    • Spatula
    • Thermometer (Meat and an optional infrared for griddle temperature)
    • Cookie sheet (Or any food board *see notes*)

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 7 hot dogs
    • 7 hot dog buns (Make sure they are the sliced-on-top type.)
    • 10 slider patties (If you make the patties from ground beef, I would suggest ground chuck and you will need approximately 2 pounds. Each patty is about 0.2 pounds.)
    • 10 slider buns (If you want a sweeter slider, use Hawaiian slider buns. Regular hamburgers are too big for this board.)
    • 5 slices mozzarella (For the stars on the blue tortilla chips.)
    • Condiments for burgers and hot dogs (Sliced cheese, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, etc.)
    • Blue tortilla chips

    Burger Spice Recipe

    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper

    Instructions

    • Prepare the slider patties if you are not using already made from the grocery store.
    • Prepare all your condiments: cut onion, slice tomatoes, etc. Set aside in the fridge until ready to serve.
    • Use a star cookie cutter to cut stars in the mozzarella cheese slices.
    • Preheat the griddle to 400 degrees F.
    • Once the griddle is at temperature, cook the hot dogs according to the directions on the package.
    • Cooking the sliders (mini burgers): I put mine on the griddle, smashed them with the spatula then sprinkled the spice blend. Cook them for 2 minutes and flip. Add cheese if desired and cook for 1 – 2 minutes.
    • Build your board alternating rows of hot dogs and smashed mini burgers.
    • Leave the top left corner empty, to fill with the blue tortilla chips and mozzarella stars.
    • Serve and Enjoy!

    Notes

I used a regular cookie sheet with 4 sides. It is easy to transport, heat resistant and holds everything perfectly.
Cooking time will vary for a wide variety of reasons, but mainly the type of hot dogs you will use and the size of your slider patties will impact cooking time.
Burger spices recipe: Don’t hesitate to double the recipe if you are making more patties or want to have some on hand for later.
There are many hot dog brands to choose from and each will cook differently. Make sure to follow the directions on the packaging.
Grilled or toasted buns, that is the question. We like to do both. While the griddle is preheating, you can butter the hot dog and slider buns. Then you choose how to finish them.

    Food Safety

All of us are responsible for the safe preparation, cooking, and serving of food. The Kitchen Bucket List shares with you our personal experiences in cooking and food safety. We are not a food safety site. As a convenience, we provide informative information we find from food safety sites. If you have questions about your food safety check your local guidelines and/or head over to the USDA. The “Storage / Leftovers / Rewarm” section of the posts are our personal estimates.
Here are some key things to remember:

    • Like Mom always said, “Wash your hands.” It is the easiest thing to do for your food safety.
    • Avoid cross-contamination between raw food items and the utensils with which they come in contact with.
    • If you choose to leave food out at room temperature, please refer to an official food safety site like the USDA Danger Zone page.
    • Choosing the appropriate oil for frying, sautéing, or using out on the griddle is not just a taste choice. Knowing the smoking point will prevent exposure to harmful compounds.
    • When you head out to use the BBQ, smoker, or outdoor griddle think about the safe placement of each. Pay close attention to the griddle it is a large hot open surface that can splatter oil.

    HAPPY GRIDDLING!!!
